Pronounce English effectively and you will be understood.
How sustainability professionals collaborate with people from around the world?
How people in green tech and renewables get jobs in the United States and Canada?
How someone from a non-English-speaking country commands an international audience in environmental activism?
You struggle to make yourself understood--especially to people from English-speaking countries.
You think you are clear but are often asked to repeat yourself.
And you secretly wonder who else has trouble understanding what you're saying...
Climbing a pyramid in Cobá, Mexico (1997)
English is my first language, but I have always loved other languages and getting to know the people who speak them.
When I was learning Spanish (and several other languages), I had no idea what was "wrong" with my pronunciation.
Instead, they would repeat words louder for the entire class, hoping these sounds would make more sense.
What made it more difficult was that before I went to Mexico to live abroad, I had NO IDEA whether the way I pronounced my words would "work."
Nearly all of my teachers up to that point had grown up speaking English--not Spanish. They didn't sound like native Spanish speakers and neither did I.
I worried whether people would be able to understand me. Whether I'd make friends. Whether I'd be able to fulfill my obligations or even take care of myself.

And I have met countless people who have had similar experiences with English.
There are many more sounds in English than in several other languages, and among them are completely foreign consonants and vowels that sound and feel strange.
Well-meaning English teachers have struggled to help their students with pronunciation, if they even taught it at all.
And without practice opportunities, it is difficult to know how effective your pronunciation is until you find yourself talking with colleagues from English-speaking countries, or traveling abroad for school or business.
For many people who move to the United States or other places where English is the official language, they lack time to study or learn pronunciation.
Instead, it feels like being thrown in the water to sink or swim.
The first life-changing experience was living in Mexico. There, I discovered that while I could sometimes make myself understood, I had a lot of room for improvement.
What helped was taking classes on speaking and finding opportunities to practice.
The classes gave me a framework for understanding how to make myself understood.
The practice helped me re-train my muscles and make my pronunciation automatic.
Key to all of this was making friends! My Mexican friends were so helpful and patient. They tried to understand me and corrected me when needed.
Once I returned to Ohio and no longer had as many opportunities to speak, I created them so that I could continue learning.
I listened to and sang along with music, watched videos, and narrated my day out loud. Sure, my roommates laughed sometimes at this, but it was worth it. Between this, living abroad in Spain years later, and the second life-changing event, Spanish speakers often ask me if I am from another Spanish-speaking country. 🙌

This experience led me to the second life-changing event: getting my Masters in Linguistics (the study of languages).
From there, I learned a framework that allows me to help my clients assess their specific pronunciation needs to speak more clearly.

“I’ve seen myself improve a lot with practicing; it’s gotten exciting for me to do every morning. I’ve improved not just in [reading aloud], but also with my colleagues. I’m able to stress some words without rushing through the word–I PRONOUNCE it. So, when I’m in a meeting and I’m having a conversation, and it’s actually a conversation because people are hearing what I’m saying! And when I say what I want to say, I put a full stop.
So, I’m in command of what I’m saying. I’m in control. Instead of trying to say it and getting ahead of myself and say ‘like, uh’ and stop because I don’t have anything else to say, and they’re wondering whether I have anything else to say, I’m more in control and in command.”
